While it's obviously great to see your doc first, I do understand why people ask some question and get a little irritated when I remember some parents aren't okay with talking about things, like birth control, so won't take them to doctor. Dr. Mike, please keep this in mind when answering some questions with "go to your doctor".

I live in a city where the air quality is particularly bad. I was also diagnosed with asthma at a very young age. I'm wondering if there are any preventative measures I can take from having another attack? Do masks actually help?

If you were drawing blueprints for a human body v2.0, what changes would you make on a mechanical level? For instance, duplicating or separating the functions of the vasovagal nerve to provide redundancy and resilience?

Unfortunately, this is not all on the schools. Sure, starting later is nice, but most teens just take it as an invitation to stay up later before going to bed. The real problem is teens wanting to stay up so late, not the school start times. Ideally, I would have school start at 9, but most teens would just stay up until 1 or later then.

4:17 In anyone with a healthy nervous system, pain tolerance or pain threshold is not chromosome related. It's individually experiential via exposure to pain.
Someone who is exposed to pain through, say, regular exercise, as opposed to someone who is sedentary, will have a higher pain threshold than the person who is sedentary.
Women who give birth are exposed to severe pain, so their threshold increases during child birth, and that pain threshold can be felt for some time afterwards. Women who have given a painful birth will acquire a high pain threshold. That being said, menstruation also comes with a monthly painful experience, which men do not experience, and this, too, also increases a woman's pain threshold. However, a man who body builds for a living will have a significant pain threshold as well as a woman who body builds.
That being said, someone who has a high pain threshold who seeks comfortable situations, becomes sedentary, loses a degree of their high pain threshold, and they will become more sensitive to every little nuance of pain. This is why being sedentary to seek comfort/flee from pain only serves to increase sensitivity to everyday painful experiences. So you can see there is an upper-boundary and lower-boundary to pain threshold. That just comes down to being a living human being with a functioning nervous system. Again, it comes down to an individual's physical experience.
Also, it depends on the health of your nervous system. if your nerves have damage, or are hyper-sensitive, that plays a role in your pain threshold as well, but this is also an example of pain threshold being individually experiential.

One side note. On the mental side, if you are focusing on pain as you experience pain, it actually hurts more because you are thinking about pain, and experiencing pain simultaneously. It is a feedback cycle. You can break that cycle by focusing on breathing through the painful exertion, which diminishes the experience of mental pain on the mental level while still experiencing physical pain on the physical level.

                                                                                        Hope that helps.
