Jeeze. From this video to the one you did on Kong, how have you gotten nearly this many views??? It's like you don't even understand what you're watching. Especially for the Kong video, if r/Whoosh could be put into a person that is you.

It really seems like someone said "What if black people were not marginalized and instead were the ones who were prejudice against another race? Like, if it was orcs and fairies lives matter instead? And white people had nothing to do with these racism arguments? Then people would see that white people have nothing to do with racism in the real world. It's really just how hateful people are naturally and that will make people stop bringing up white privilege and the history behind the systems that promote it in the real world......We're going to change the world! And we'll get Will Smith to star in it because Will Smith represents all black people so they CAN'T deny our movie!!"

(I am a black woman btw)

It's not that you are 'overthinking" "Bright"... You are overthinking "Bright" while injecting uncut crack cocaine directly into your carotid artery. Take what seems to be your recurring complaint, "Mexicans still get shit for the Alamo" - Did it ever occur to you that maybe modern Mexicans in the world of "Bright" get that "shit" because some time in the past of "their" world, there was a battle, fought at a place called "The Alamo", (perhaps between humans and the Orcs), which was won by the Orcs because a nearby Mexican army refused to come to the aide of the beseiged Americans defenders?

It wasn't actually required that the film explain why Mexicans are looked down at because of "The Alamo", only that they are. The viewer is free to fill in the blanks with whatever reason they like.

Also, "STILL get shit for the Alamo?' Didn't the whole "dark lord" stuff happen thousands of years ago? The 200 ish years since the Alamo is clearly not a comparable time scale as "still" seems to imply here.

Oh gods...I loved this film. I overlooked ALL these flaws, noticed none of it. But after watching this I'm afraid to rewatch it. Oh gods why! But your analysis is perfect, it cannot be denied. Fudge!

That was halfway through. Now that I've finished it I am absolutely ashamed that I ever liked it. Listening to your last 5-10 minutes felt like a slap in the face (my face) and a "Are you fucking serious?! Wake the hell up!" yell, to my face - as I feel a warm breath blast my face while shame, disbelief and pride-fueled indigation mate in my stomach.

                        I'm getting a beer, I can't right now.

I will always (cross my fingers as hope for no dementia, Alzheimer's, mental degradation) remember the pleasantly-surprised-after-finding-something-to-watch-on-Netflix feeling I had after watching it that one time but now I can never go back. The one video has burnt my bridges to Bright. I'm subscribed and I pray you have no Harry Potter videos.

god this touched on so many points why bright just. rubbed me the wrong way and it frustrates me so much because i really wanted to like it but it falls so flat at every corner. i think the like. aside from clearly slapped on visual racial coding coming mostly from costumes department, there's elements of visual design and effects that make me want to like it, but it doesn't go anywhere. i want whoever did concept art and visual effects for this movie to work on a better urban fantasy movie. i need to stop watching movies just because "idk it looked cool". i mean i don't but sometimes awful scripts get good visual effects and my heart hurts

originally nords were supposed to be scandinavian inspired. after all they're even named afteer norwegians.

but skyrims nords give off more of an american vibe. deeply divided over every issue, rampart racism that those in charge do nothing about, willing to go to war over fing nothing, and the two contentenders for the throne are an insane, power hungry maniac and a levelheaded, fair and just person with a legitimate claim. and it makes sense whyt they feel so different 200 years after the oblivion crisis. because bethesda retconned basically every scrap of lore. they even MOVED markarth.

This is the worst kind of What If style storytelling. Not to get all "butterfly effect", but the idea that orcs and elves would just dress and behave and conform to human culture is just insulting to me as a viewer.

It's a combination of Alien Nation and Training Day set in an alternate reality world where fictional races and magic exist. Also, the alternate world is everything that a 2019 progressive college student erroneously beleives about race as it relates to oppressed and marginalized people with a few new races to get the short end of the equity stick.

It's kind of fitting that you should mention Harry Potter, because one of the (many) reasons JKR has gotten so much flak since the series ended is that she keeps revealing new details/calling attention to things that should result in the Harry Potter universe being wildly different than our own.

For example, she later established that pre-colonial America's magical community wasn't a secret, but the British wizarding world was and British wizards didn't really get involved in the whole "empire" thing. So...why exactly does modern America exist in this universe? The Native Americans having magic on their side, but not the colonists, should've made things play out VERY differently.

It kind of works when it's kept in a setting where you aren't being confronted with those kinds of questions, like it was in the books, and the details are kept vague enough that you can imagine what makes the most sense to you and nothing blatantly jumps out at you as not making any sense, but if you expand the world, like she did, and you don't put thought into what our world would look like if this extra stuff was added, it starts to fall apart completely.

                                                                Carlos Caro  3 weeks back

27:41 Lindsay and Terry Pratchett argue that speciesism would replace intra-humanity racism in a world with other fantasy races - black and white gang up on green. However, Lindsay treats Tolkien as a massive influence on the genre. Gran'pappy Tolkien disagreed, as do many other fantasy worlds that Lindsay cited as inspiration.

Just because everyone on Middle Earth hates Orcs doesn't mean those snooty elves don't look down on the humans and hobbits, that those with the blood of Numenor don't think of themselves as better than those who don't have it, or that this breed of hobbit in the Shire doesn't consider those Bree hobbits a bunch of backwards weirdos.

Lindsay mentioned Warhammer. Well, there even with all the speciesist hatreds (e.g. dwarf vs elf), there's plenty of intra-human prejudices (e.g. those frog-gobblin' Bretonians vs. the honorless Imperial dogs vs. the damn Wastelanders vs. vs. Tilea vs...look, it goes on a while.) There's even similar prejudices between subgroups of the same factions, such as the different kingdoms of High Elves stereotyping each other badly and having conflict as a result.

D&D: Many settings, but in many of those settings, in universe human kingdoms and realms frequently stereotype and misunderstand each other, especially in earlier editions when less...woke...authors wrote a lot of the setting.

Again, from Lindsay's example, in Skyrim Imperials stereotype Nords stereotype Redguards stereotype Bretons and vice versa.

So quiet a lot of speculative fiction worlds contradict Pratchett's quip; black and white still don't get along even if green is around. Many worlds do not think the existence of elves would end human prejudice against itself.

I mean really, the filmmakers had probably pitched to the studio "Imagine L.A. with ... gangsta Orcs!"

The problem with this philosophy in real life is that it is incorrect. The problem with this in fantasy is that the ideology is correct. Homunculi are superior to humans in FMAB. All orcs are evil in LOTR. These groups can be used as metaphors, but it is still messed up.
