Maybe they can't do propulsive rentry because they jettisoned the batteries and they cannot restart the engines, isn't it?

How big is rocket lab rockets? Are they half the size of spacex falcon9 is that what makes it possible for them to catch in air with helicopter?

The bottom line, how much would it lower their launch costs? Although they offer a niche market for small satellites, a piggy back ride on a Falcon 9 is about 70% cheaper.

I literally just had this idea, except about catching model rockets in the sky with a net carried by 3 drones, similar to what Raffaello D'Andrea did in his TED talk about the athletic ability of quadcopters. I thought, too, "That sounds like something SpaceX would do". But then I thought of the physics of it. When catching a model rocket with drones holding a net, the net has a tremendous amount of "give" (vertical distance) therefore require less force to bring the rocket to a net 0 acceleration. (Work = Force * Distance). In a SpaceX rocket, however, the engines are already there. The flight computer is already there. You can put landing legs on it. So while it's cool to catch a rocket with a flying computer, it really doesn't make sense to make another flying computer to catch another flying computer. But the novelty of the challenge is still there.

so if you had a payload that only weighed one pound that you wanted to launch aside someone else's mission, you would only need $11,500? (or is that how much it costs the company and not what they charge customers?) May not sound cheap but compared to something like the space shuttle ($27000 per pound) we are really getting somewhere, granted the shuttle was meant to carry crew members and built for an entirely different purpose and was probably the most expensive example, it was our only way in to space before we started riding on the Soyuz at a fairly high premium that I can't really calculate off hand right now.

                                      totally unrelated but...
isnt it unefficient to just use the thrusters on a rocket to take off? i mean... just going from 0 to the speed needed to get into orbit takes away a lot of fuel (i guess). what if you started not from 0Km/h but from a kick start given by a mechanical louncher.
i get that it would be complex. you would need to lounch a heavy rocket in a steady but fast way while its already activating it's thrusters BUT over time, the cost of that louncher pad (which should be reused for all lounches, would be repaid by the fuel saved over time

This makes me think you could have some kind of folding origami mechanism for the fairings that transforms them into a kind of sail plane that allows them to airbrake and sail down and land a rocket stage too.
Or maybe some kind of hybrid of where inflatable wings act a bit like a parachute but that turns a rocket stage or fairing into a sailplane.

well apart from the occasional overseas employee Rocket Labs are 'Kiwi's' & you obviously haven't heard of our well tested 'she'll be right # 8 wire solutions' to most technical problems. in New Zealand, we've been using it since New Zealand was first colonized. I know its a bit 'tongue-in-cheek' but why not. the 'Big Budget' players cant have all the fun or necessarily come up with a sensible idea. So Go Kiwi with a touch of Lockheed-Martin help & a few others.
