I’ve recently realized that Billy killing and then calling someone is very similar to the Weepy Voiced Killer, a man who used to call the police after his crimes to confess

The snow seen outside of the sorority house was actually fake, because there had been surprisingly little snow fall during the filming. A foam material that was provided by the local fire department was used for snow on the lawn and according to cinematographer Albert J. Dunk the substance actually caused the grass on the lawn to grow greener than ever the following spring.

Clare's reaction when Billy starts to strangle her with a laundry bag are real, as the actress Lynne Griffin didn't know what to expect.

The entire cast was filled with horror movie veterans, or soon-to-be stars of the genre. Olivia Hussey would star in two horror classics, this movie, and It (1990), the TV miniseries based on the Stephen King novel. John Saxon would star in this and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), another horror classic, playing a cop in both. Art Hinkle would star in this and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). Margot Kidder had just starred in Brian De Palma's Sisters (1972) before she starred in this, and would later star in The Amityville Horror (1979).

Andrea Martin was the only cast member to return for the 2006 remake.

While writing the script, Roy Moore and Bob Clark could not decide whether or not to have Jess killed off, or let her live, and so they decided to write two alternative endings to the film, one where she dies and one where she survives. Neither ending was ever filmed and so they decided to leave the ending and Jess' fate ambiguous, and stuck to this ending, despite interference from the studio.

The exact same line "The calls are coming from inside the house!" is uttered in this movie and When a Stranger Calls (1979).

There is a purpose for the eerie ringing telephone as the closing crawl appears. This indicates that the main heroine will die. However, the heroine's death is left open to personal interpretation by each member of the audience. The ending of the film forces people to think independently.

This film is regarded as being one of the first slasher films (with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), A Bay of Blood (1971), Psycho (1960), and Peeping Tom (1960) preceding this film). It set the layout for films such as John Carpenter Halloween (1978). However, director Bob Clark considered it to be more of a psychological horror film than a slasher film.

This film holds the honor of being the first seasonal slasher film (a horror movie taking place during a holiday) in horror movie history and would later be followed by Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980), Prom Night (1980), Mother's Day (1980), Graduation Day (1981), My Bloody Valentine (1981), Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) which is another Christmas horror movie, and April Fool's Day (1986).

Peter and Jesse - my totally different take? Well, after Jesse calls him the night before, pulling a move I hate having pulled on me, she says they need to talk but not then for some reason so he can stew on it just before his big performance. He tells her he loves her, she doesn't say it back and did she ever? It doesn't seem that way as their story continues with her telling him she's pregnant with his baby but is going to kill it. Apparently she wasn't even going to tell him, then says she doesn't wanna talk about it when he gets upset. Let's review shall we? The day of his performance she casually drops by to say, "I'm murdering your unborn child and no I don't want to talk about it" in hopes of...what? Worth mentioning too is the fact that he was excited by the news of a child, not utterly outraged, terrified or discouraging but I digress. Later when he drops by acting irrational because she has given him no say and ruined his performance earlier she THEN tries to have a "reasonable/adult" conversation with him which translates to her repeating that she's going to kill his child and he should calm down about it. Instead of leaving the bat crazy Jesse all together he wants to give up HIS dreams for their baby and let her work or do whatever she pleases with him as a family unit. Wow. Imagine the lunacy of a man wanting to settle down and give up his life to raise a child with the woman he loves. Jesse is a total bitch and a murderer, who ends up killing Peter thinking he's crazy and we're supposed to buy this somehow by the end of the movie. He wasn't Billy and he wasn't crazy, he's the example of a man with NO say what so ever in society about what happens to his own offspring and it's even more despicable today that women like Jesse are put on a pedestal.

I’m 21 years old. I’ve always heard of this film and it’s influence on Halloween. I was never interested in watching it though. Halloween 1978 is the first horror movie I’ve ever seen at age 8... I was hooked ever since. At 21, watching black Christmas... I felt exactly how I felt at 8 watching Halloween for the first time... this film is a masterpiece and I’m ashamed I didn’t watch it sooner. VERY good film and the more I watch it the more I realize this film was way more than ahead of its time. The leading cast, the small details, the fact that there was literally NO SEX in this film was very surprising too, usually every slasher film has that. This film was not what I expected and the ending... oh my god that ending... I’ve never felt so much chills since Halloween 1978... VERY good movie and just as I watch Halloween every October I will make it my duty to watch this every December! Definitely top 3 favorite slasher film for me!

Art Hindle, in an interview included with the DVD and Blu-ray, reveals that the fur coat he wore in this film was in fact his own. It still hangs in his closet to this day.

Andrea Martin was the only cast member to return for the 2006 remake.

The killer, popularly know as Billy, was never confirmed by name. Much like other aspects of the movie, not knowing the killer's identity is meant to increase a sense of ambiguity. Not knowing anything about the killer was intended to make him less relateable, to have a much more suspenseful impact on the audience.

In order to get the the proper creepy and raspy voice for Billy, actor Nick Mancuso had to stand on his head to compress the thorax in his neck

The film is listed number 87 on Bravo Channel's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

Although this film's original title was Silent Night, Evil Night it shares no connection to the Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) film, another Christmas horror movie, or any of its sequels. Another similarly titled film called Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972) also has no relation to the film.

This film gave Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder recognition as Scream Queens. Ironically enough, Olivia Hussey does not like horror films as they scare her too much.

There is a purpose for the eerie ringing telephone as the closing crawl appears. This indicates that the main heroine will die. However, the heroine's death is left open to personal interpretation by each member of the audience. The ending of the film forces people to think independently.

While writing the script, Roy Moore and Bob Clark could not decide whether or not to have Jess killed off or let her live and so they decided to write two alternate endings to the film, one where she dies and one where she survives. Neither ending was ever filmed and so they decided to leave the ending and Jess's fate ambiguous and stuck to this ending despite interference with the studio.

Coincidentally enough, the exact same line "The calls are coming from inside the house!" is uttered in this movie and When a Stranger Calls (1979).

So that’s the facts about this movie
