My Take on NURSES | Hospital Vlog | Doctor Mike

- Since I began watching medical dramas for the reacts series, I've found more and more that nurses get overlooked within media. Being a family medicine physician I can very much empathize with the situation. The dedication and contribution to healthcare from both fields is incredibly understated.
Studying to become a nurse is a noble undertaking and it is a career with so many positives that I decided to make a dedicated video to all the amazing nurses out there. Instead of just me talking about nurses I decided to vlog with some of my staff I've been working with for the last few years to give you some first-hand insights into the career. Obviously, some of the nurses are a bit camera shy, which is understandable but I think they did a great job highlighting whats its like to be a nurse and in general about being a nurse.
I know you guys have wanted a hospital vlog for some time now but as you can imagine vlogging in a hospital can be quite difficult with patient privacy and all. But for nurses week 2018 I had to make an exception and interview my colleagues. Also at the end of the video, you'll see many of the doctors I've worked or am still working with.
So, on this kickoff for Nurses Awareness/Appreciation week I again from the bottom of my heart want to say:
THANK YOU!
- Doctor Mike Varshavski D.O.
P.S. If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Medical Drama Review Series next week so please submit more names of shows/episodes you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

Take me
This video is the push I needed to apply for nursing
For anyone who thinks nurses don't get paid well, remember that nursing is like any other career. You can make 40k doing 9-5 in a super easy country family health office, or you can make 140k doing travel PRN work for ICUs and EDs 60hrs/wk+. Get your doctorates, and make 250k-350k being a CRNA administering volatile gases. It's completely up to the nurse to decide how much work and how much money to make.
I have someone in my church that’s been a nurse for a few decades, and someone else who is going into nursing. So I understand the long hours part at 4:18. The one that’s been there awhile was our lead singer and guitar player so when she started getting more responsibility cause the hospitals near where I live are horrible to work for, she was on call like all the time and had to miss many services.
2:29 LOL, that’s Devin from buzzfeed
when i was in the hospital the nurses were so amazing. i was in after a suicide attempt and my nurses and security guards would talk to me when i couldn’t sleep, offer water, food, coloring books just like i was their child. it was those small things that started my recovery. i cant thank them enough. my goal is to become a nurse and help others just like they helped me
I’m a freshman in college working towards my nursing degree. I’m currently writing my English research paper on why nurses need more recognition
Nurses are amazing ! I spent a few months in the hospital. It was a scary and depressing time for me. I don’t think I would have gotten through it without the AMAZING nurses ❤️❤️❤️❤️
while nobody cares about cna's sadly its bullshit
I love nurses!
Scouring through your vids and saw this. I hope you make another video about nurses. As a child, I was often confined in hospitals due to one reason or another. Most of my stay, it would be nurses who I encountered more. They really are unsung heroes. My mom was a nurse so I'm even more biased.
Teamwork makes the dream work.
2:02 - 2:17 ! The catalyst that encourages my decision to becoming a Doctor ! ❤️
My moms oncology nurses were the best in the most difficult times.
I want you to watch nurse Jackie and make a video reacting to that. 😊
You should educate people on medical lab techs.
IM A NURSE & SO proud
Dr. Mike, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to you for sharing the true meaning of becoming a nurse - in my case, one for the fluff-shedding, slobber-dribbling, tail-whipping kind. ;) I've just graduated as a veterinary nurse and honestly, everything you mentioned rings true, even in the animal world. Often times, we are the ones at the front-line advising owners on how to prevent life-threatening tick-borne and viral diseases, giving out dietary recommendations to prevent obesity and treating wounds when the vets simply wouldn't have time. All this amidst essentially running the practice's hygiene, operational sterility, emergency treatment, owner consolation and pharmacy stocking, and most importantly, patient TLC. Nothing cures like love, I truly believe that. We as vets, doctors, vet nurses and human nurses should all understand we're in this profession to save and change people and animals' lives, not to feel superior to or beneath our peers. But at the end of the day, even if no one recognises you for what you do, YOU know, and God sees - that's all you need to love yourself and who you were created to be. :) All the love to fellow nurses, whether partners to the four-legged or otherwise, and to the doctors and medical professionals who respect and cherish this opportunity we have as a privileged group of individuals to change the world, one heart at a time. x
As a pharmacy technician, #meh. As the daughter of a nurse. #love
As a med student, I hope that as a doctor I appreciate nurses as much as they deserve. Thanks to you I have learnt more about their duties and roles in the healthcare system and how valuable they really are. You say it best: “nurses keep the hospitals running”.
Nurses and doctors are both great people, for the most part, I've had both worthless doctors that absolutely don't care except for a paycheck, and I've had nurses that realllllllllly hates people and tries to make everything miserable for everyone. Those people don't deserve anything.
Maybe you could make a video only about the differences between doctors and nurses (in like their duties and such) and why some people may choose being a nurse and why some people may choose being a doctor.
What about CNAs?
People need to hear a doctor's take on pharmacists.
It’s interesting being an MA and RN student how many nurses are in your family medicine group. In our clinic there aren’t any that directly work with family medicine. There’s lots of nurses in the clinic...but none that are set to work directly in each department (except for peds and a few others). It’s the MAs that do all the med refills, phone calls, med admin, vitals, etc. But even though i’m not a nurse yet...i wish as an MA i had a doctor like you. Most of the doctors i work for (and i’m a float) are distant and cold. Not very friendly and easy to talk to.
Nursing is not a career, it is a calling
ehhh another reason why I don't want to be a nurse....cause when you hear someone call "nurse" you immediately think of a women...not a 6'1 big man...I'm not trying to say all nurse are always going to be women, just like to see more men, why I'm proud of my little bro going to be a nurse, while I'll be a EMT yaay...no doctor, I want to keep my GAMING life
I‘m a Peadiatric Nurse and wanted to thank you for this video!! Not only patients need to learn about it but also a lot of doctors! We are a team!! Doctors need nurses and nurses need doctors! One more thing: doctors, trust your nurses- we‘ve been doing this for so long and we spent a lot more time with the patients! So when we tell you that something is wrong do not dismiss it! I cannot tell you how many times this happened to me and what really breaks my heart is that the patients actually suffer from that!
I like how she calls you by your first name. 😂
As a ITU nurse, I truly felt appreciated and respected watching this video. Thank you, you are an amazing doctor :)
DM. MD.
'but it's the hard that makes it special'
Would love every doctor to see how amazing nurses are, THANK YOU
Maybe you should try watching(and make a review) FIVE FEET APART if you haven't. It’s a movie btw, about cystic fibrosis. Of course it had hollywood thingy in it but I think it did justice to CFers and nurses. The thing about CF is, I’ve never heard about it until this movie happened so this movie has a special place in my heart because I love learning something new and most of CFers were actually loved this movie because it successfully raising awareness about CF eventho they know it didn't 100% accurate but still they did justice about the disease.
I would love to know your point of view about this movie and CF.
I remember when I was on duty ( i am nurse ) I carry a vice grip to change oxygen tanks. I carry oxygen tanks without trolly.
And I remember after my shift my patient died and the relative approached me and cried and informed me that her mother died. We end up talking on the floor and tried to comfort her. At the end she thanked me. Keep in mind that this was in a ward not in a ICU setting and in a public hospital
when I was in hospital visiting my dad everyday for 4 months I only saw the doctors maximum 10 times. But the nurses were so nice in there and used to help me whenever I used to visit dad from school they would be there whenever I come in just chat and ask any questions I had because of my homework in health and social care. Truly without them I don't know what would the hospitals do. They ARE the backbone of healthcare industry.
Good job ! Dr. Mike I think ur doing an amazing job appreciating the nurses becuz they play a very prominent role in a hospital
proud nurse here :)

Awww. It is so cute, he thinks the nurses love him.
Living with a nurse has definitely changed my mind on everything
As you said, nurses may not receive the gratitude they deserve and I know that doctors have the same issue as well. Sometimes there are patients that can be so hard to deal with; they're noncompliant, and disrespectful. How do deal with situations like these?
Thank you for recognizing us nurses!!! 😆👍🏽
Love this so much!
If students start to think about what it actually means to be a nurse, no one would do it.
I was in the hospital and I was diagnosed with scarlet fever 2 times and after that I had HSP . Can you tell me how I got HSP and scarlet fever that I got twice???
